[frs-241] How do I upgrade ColdFusion without re-installing FusionReactor?

Important Note

This technote refers to v4.5 and earlier. It does NOT apply to the latest edition of FusionReactor

Installation Details

The first stage is to prepare yourself by understanding your installation. A typical FusionReactor installation consists of 4 main components:

  1. FusionReactor software directory
  2. Servlet container web.xml file
  3. fusionreactor.jar application library
  4. fusionreactor.so / fusionreactor.dll native library

For a default, 32-bit, single-instance ColdFusion installation on Windows these would typically be:

  1. C:FusionReactor
  2. C:ColdFusion9runtimeserverscfusionSERVER-INFdefault-web.xml
  3. C:ColdFusion9runtimeserverscfusionSERVER-INFlibfusionreactor.jar
  4. C:ColdFusion9runtimebinFusionReactor.dll

These may be different depending on your system and the installation options chosen. Defaults for other platforms can be found in the FusionReactor installation guide ( https://www.fusion-reactor.com/fr/helpdocs/installation_guide.pdf ).

Backup

Backup your entire FusionReactor installation directory. This directory contains the configuration for all of your instances.

Upgrade ColdFusion

At this point you can now go-ahead and upgrade ColdFusion as you would without FusionReactor installed.
Continue only when the upgrade is completed.

Verify FusionReactor Installation

Depending on which version you are moving from and to different elements of the FusionReactor installation may be over-written/changed. The best procedure is to verify all the elements:

  • Does the FusionReactor entry in the web.xml file
    • Still exist?
    • Is it still the first <filter /> block?
    • Does it still point to the correct reactor.conf path?
  • Does the fusionreactor.jar application library still exist?
  • Does the fusionreactor.so/fusionreactor.dll native library still exist?

After verifying these elements (and restarting the instance if any changes needed to be made) your ColdFusion instance should be upgraded and FusionReactor still enabled.

Troubleshooting

Many customers find it easier to un-install FusionReactor prior to upgrading and then re-install FusionReactor afterwards. This is possible but depending on your system, you are very likely to:

  • De-activate your licence
  • Loose any custom configuration (eg email setup, crash protection settings, enterprise scripting, etc)

If you must un-install & re-install, please remember to backup your configuration files first and restore them afterwards.
